Key West Blues Demo

This past Monday, I had the immense pleasure of doing a demonstration for the Upper Hudson Valley Watercolor Society.  It was great fun being able to talk 'shop talk' with like-minded folks!  The room was filled, so there were lots of comments and questions, which I love.  Here is the demo in four parts.

This is the drawing with the initial wash.  The paper was soaked on both sides and I washed on the main colors that were going to be used.

I begin my paintings in the center of interest because it is when I have the most enthusiasm for the painting; I am tackling the initial reason why I wanted to do the painting.  Hopefully that energy and excitement for the subject will show through.

At this point, I am most concerned with color balance and values.

This is the time to add the cherry on top: details!  Since it is a Key West painting, it had to have roosters in it.  If you have ever been in Key West, you will know what I mean.  If you click on my Watercolors page, you will  see more detail.

Progression of Recent Work

This is a new category that I am trying out. The feature will operate much like a blog.  If you want to get each week’s feature automatically sent to you, simply click on the RSS feed button. That way, you can get just the feature and not all the website contents or newsletter.   Some weeks I might have the progress of a painting that I am doing.  Other weeks, it may be used as a teaching tool, so that you can see the progression of my work up until completion.  Yet again, I may post a painting that I have done in another medium or another genre.  This is where I will also occasionally offer small works or different mediums. The key to section is the RSS feed so that you can receive the information first. Thanks for looking.

This first week is the progression of a recent painting, 'Oriental Pleasures,'  22"X30"

This is my initial drawing.

This is my initial underwash along with a changed drawing.

Here I painted the subject and background.

The completed painting with a strengthened subject and background.
